Congratulations and many thanks to experts keeping
us up to date and informing us about the issue, and debating it. And when I
say 'experts' I mean people who know really about our fauna and ecology, and
those who know about politics.
The Bracks government is VERY sensitive to public
opinion (especially informed opinion) which is enormously welcome. I believe we
got our local marine sanctuary (good for birds) because of that and
I congratulate them on responding positively on Friday to the report
about dredging the Bay. It might have been a near thing because industry and
unions were lobbying so hard (never forget it was an industry lobby that
overrode scientific caution to give us the Cane Toad!).
But is CRUCIAL we communicate our knowledge.
So PLEASE ensure your records of significant species get
on to the Atlas of Victorian Wildlife or, for birds, the Birds Australia Atlas,
especially where they relate to habitat.
