Michael,
There are birds alive in captivity, both in public and private zoos and
collections. May I suggest you read Tony Juniper's book, 'Spix's Macaw, The
Race to save the World's Rarest Bird', Fourth estate 2002.

The book tells the true story of an attempt to gather birds held in private
zoos and collections to conduct captive breeding or future release in the
wild. Unfortunately most of the private owners would not participate in the
endeavour for fear of losing their birds, despite the fact that Brazilian
government had never given permission for any birds to be exported in the
first instance. It's a sad story of greed.
Cheers
Alastair
