Chris, I would be VERY surprised indeed if an Oriental Cuckoo appeared
in Melbourne!
On the Occam's Razor principle, I believe it's a young fantailed cuckoo
- note yellow eye-ring. The dark-brown plumage with barred breast is a
juvenile/immature plumage. Many years ago I was severely puzzled by such
a bird at Hattah NP. Mr MacEvey, then chief of the Melbourne Museum's
Ornithology Dept., showed me numerous cuckoo specimens in the old
dungeons under the Russell Street building, and the young FTC exactly
matched the photo.
