Hi birders,
I just found the newest edition of Simpson & Day and took it home (along
with the Morcombe and Slater field-guides) because I read in some reports
that the Simpson& Day has a great section on bird-families from Australia.
Which is information I was looking for because as a Dutchmen I will
encounter many "new" birdfamilies on my Queensland trip this year. But the
first thing I read in the 7th edition of Simpson & Day is that they removed
part of the former handbook!!! Does anyone know whether this handbook part
is available on the internet or anywhere else? (They only sell the newest
editon down here. And so they should).
My "desktop-experience" with the Australian field-guides sofar;
From the four guides (I already had a very old Pizzey&Knight) the simpson &
Day to my opinion has definitely the superior artwork. The Morecomb has the
best determination-clues, and the Slater is a bit of both. The Pizzey has
very "antique" artwork (and the best text) but because thats the edition.
The artwork of Knight on the mamals of Australia book is a lot better (in my
opinion that is).
