Hi Pete & Sue
You can get reasonable maps of urban areas from either
http://www.where-is.com.au or
http://www.street-directory.com.au/aus_new/index.cgi
Both sites have tools for estimatiing distances and routes.
If you want something to use with your GPS, then there are lots of
possibilities - none inexpensive though!
Garmin produces MapSource software. I think these all work in
conjunction with Garmin GPS units.
The Trip & Waypoint Manager is $59
The City Navigator CD is around $375 and the Metro Guide $199 - note
that this is software only! I've been using my father-in-law's
StreetPilot lately - quite an amazing device that can navigate you
through and to any Australian city, as well as plenty of country
places. It even announces turns and lane changes as you go ... for a
price: about $2000 including all the mapping software!!
Eagle, Magellan and NavMan have similar setups - e.g. Magellan's
Discovery Australia CD is around $240.
Hope you have a good trip!

Hi,
We are visiting Australia later this year on a birding holiday. Does
anyone know of any Road Atlas type software that covers Australia in
detail in a similar way to Microsoft's MapPoint does for America and
Europe?
Many thanks
