Peter,
One possibility....
I used to work at Avalon airport many moons ago with training flights, and the grass was slashed as I understood it, 1) to keep the Tiger snakes at bay, and 2) to help prevent bushfires with subsequent damage to aircraft, etc.
 
This was B.B. (before birding!), but I did appreciate the "larks ascending"!!!
