Don't you think it's amazing that these "Nigerian 419" scams continue?
Of course, to be successful they need at least two attributes:
credibility and bait. In the last few years the scams have been
flooding our inboxes, which means that credibility has been threatened
(!?) of late.
Their response is to pretend to be higher and higher profile characters.
These days, they generally add a convenient link to some news event that
lends some credibility to the story they're spinning - a plane crash in
the Sudan, or an oil company in turmoil in Russia. In this paricular
case it's a story that we all know.
The bait has also grown. It seems that they keep adding a zero. I
don't know about you, but I'm not going to believe a thing until it gets
to US$10b. At that point I'm going to spontaneously believe it all and
go for it, hook, line, sinker, rod, bait box and copy of Anglers'
Weekly.
