Hi all,
Despite the somewhat wet conditions, I had a very successful two and
a half days birding in the Sydney and Blue Mountains regions during
the past few days with an English visitor. Some of the highlights
included:
- 1 Blue-billed Duck (male, breeding plumage) at Lithgow sewage works.
- 2 Wandering Whistling-Ducks at Pitt Town Lagoon.
- Bushell's Lagoon looking great with many species, including a flock
of about 15 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, both spoonbills, many Aust.
Shovelers, etc, White-bellied Sea-Eagle, Collared Sparrowhawk and a
Peregrine Falcon regularly flying past. We actually spent a couple of
hours longer here than we'd planned after a vehicle breakdown and a
wait for the NRMA. Fortunately things were able to be fixed up
quickly and we were on our way again. I have my vehicle well trained
to break down only in good birding spots!
- About 100 White-throated Needletails flying very low in front of a
rainstorm on Tuesday morning at the Richmond Turf Farms.
- After searching two hours for Glossy Black-Cockatoos, finally
finding a pair and within seconds, also seeing 3 Gang-gangs and the
ubiquitous Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos at Kings Tableland.
- A pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles soaring very low over our heads in
the mist at Inspiration Point in the Blue Mountains.
- Banksia serrata flowers starting to open in the upper Blue
Mountains and as a result, Crescent Honeyeaters have returned with
several being heard at Inspiration Point and Valley of the Waters.
- While spotlighting near Blackheath, seeing four Greater Gliders
including a beautiful pale individual (not birds, but still nice),
and a Tawny Frogmouth with a VERY large spider in its mouth.
- Good rainfalls have freshened things up in the Capertee Valley,
which I'll write about in a separate email.
Cheers
Carol
