G'day all,
Thanks to those who helped with areas worth trying for Sooty Owls.
I ended up using my limited birding time in and around the Badger Weir
Picnic ground on the Badger creek SE of Healesville. Since I spend most of
my time inland of the divide it's always a treat to visit the magnificent
wet forest east of Melbourne and this particular spot was as good as I've
seen.
Unfortunately no Sooty owls were heard or seen (but hey!,if you don't try!?)
however we did hear a Powerful Owl calling in the gully and saw a Wombat
plus a number of Greater Gliders.
During daylight hours highlights were,
Lewin's Honeyeater,
Rufous Fantail,
Superb Lyrebirds,
Large-billed Scrubwrens,
and a pair of Satin Flycatchers.
Of course many species seen during the day in the Healesville
sanctuary!,highlights being 2 very lively Brolgas,Painted Buttonquail with
newly born chicks(loved their camouflage, and Satin Bowerbirds inside and
outside the wire.
Both loved and hated seeing the pair of Powerful Owls close up.Can't quite
get into seeing these caged but I know they have some great breeding
programmes going.
Cheers,
Simon Starr.
