I use BirdBase from Santa Barbara
Software Products and have found it very good, especially in
conjunction with their accompanying program BirdArea. I bought the software
many years ago when nothing else was available, so have no direct experience of
its competitors. Over the years I have entered nearly 40,000 records. The
back-up service is excellent.
Some minor adjustments to the species list (which
follows
Clements) are needed to make it accord with
the current Australian taxonomy. The program allows this to be done
easily.
There are various comparative reviews of
US-produced software on the web (e.g. AviSys, Birder's Diary). There are
also some good-sounding Australian products that I have not tried.
While some US reviewers have tended to go for AviSys, the comments on
the BirdBase home page http://members.aol.com/sbsp/holyoak.htm are
worth reading, especially the point made about the comparative convenience of
BirdBase if (like me) you record sightings in the form of "trips".

Neville
