15 January
1 Australian Pratincole seen near south-east corner of Lake Murphy near

1 Wood Sandpiper seen at Macdonalds swamp near Kerang. Thanks Simon Starr.
15 January
At Braeside Park were 2 Darter, 1 Latham's Snipe, approx 25 Sharp-tailed
Sandpiper, 1 Australian Spotted Crake, 1 Whistling Kite. Thanks Ben
Sinclair.
12 January
A magic moment: Australian Spotted Crake, Buff-banded Rail and Baillon's
Crake all in the scope at the same time, just 15 m to the right of 22 Glossy
Ibis at the Western Treatment Plant, pond north east of the Borrow Pits.

12 January
1 Little Egret at Westgate Park (the freshwater lake) – Wed 12 Jan (first
sighting in the 3 years Richard has been visiting regularly). Thanks Richard

11 January
There was 3 White-throated Needletails over the Western Treatment Plant
office on Farm Rd, a Black Kite further down Farm Rd, 7 or 8 Black-tailed
Godwits on the Borrow Pits, Marsh Sandpipers on the Conservation Ponds and 3
Brolgas at the T-Section Lagoons. Thanks Dave Torr.
9 January
2 Australian (Spotted) Crakes, 2 Spotless Crakes, 1 Baillon’s Crake, 1
Buff-banded Rail – all within 15 mins in the same 25 metre stretch of reeds
along the Little River southern edge at the Western Treatment Plant. Thanks

9 Janaury
A Lewin's Rail was seen at Braeside Wetlands from the platform on the small
loop with boardwalk near Governer Road for about 5 minutes. Thanks Tim
Bawden.
9 January
In his Maffra garden today, a White-necked Heron and a White-plumed
Honeyeater, both unusual sightings for the area. Thanks Duncan Fraser.
8 January
The highlights of the monthly Edithvale Wetlands survey were 5,000
Sharp-tailed Sandpipers (only 1 with an orange leg flag), 1 Pectoral
Sandpiper, 1 Wood Sandpiper, 2 Marsh Sandpipers, 1 Spotless Crake, 1 Common
Tern and 2 Cattle Egrets (an unusual date as rare here in summer). Thanks

8 January
1 Black-tailed Godwit near Cohuna. Thanks Simon Starr.
4 January
A party of 5 European Greenfinches were observed in the Traralgon gardens
adjacent to the shopping plaza. Thanks Jacquie and Len Axen.
4 January
At the Chiltern No.1 Dam there was a White-backed Swallow and 2 Zebra Finch,
while at Bartley's Block Chiltern-Mt Pilot NP there was a single
White-throated Needletail. Thanks Michael Ramsey.
4 January
At the Western area of the You Yangs, SW of Melbourne there was a flock of
at least 10 White-throated Needletails. Other birds of interest included a
number of Brown Treecreepers including a couple of young and a flock of 20+
Diamond Firetails of which at least a dozen were black billed young birds.

4 January
Greg Oakley has reported that he has seen two Lesser Frigatebird at Waratah
Bay, North Walker, in Gippsland. The two birds circled the bay, and then
headed east in the direction of Cape Liptrap. Greg, who's familiar with
Lesser Frigatebird, dismissed the likelihood of any other species. Thanks

3 January
At Yan Yean Reservoir there were a few Little Corellas amongst a huge flock
of Long-bills. Also some Sulphur-crested Cockatoos mixed in. Thanks Sue

3 January
There were at least 40 (possible maximum of 50-60) White-throated
Needletails swooping low over the Grey Box and Ironbark canopy at Bartley's
Block in Chiltern Box-Ironbark National Park. Thanks Martin O'Brien.
2 January
Highlights of the monthly Eastern Treatment Plant survey included 2 Glossy
Ibis, 20 Lathams Snipe, 3 Common Sandpiper, 40 Red-necked Avocet and 2
White-winged Black Tern. Thanks Mike Carter.
2 January
An adult Spotless Crake was seen at the Werribee Open Range Zoo (from the
first little bridge on the track between the main entrance area and the
Cheetahs). Thanks Paul Peake.
2 January
There was a solitary Nankeen Night-heron at the Moonee Ponds Creek
artificial "lake" at the commencement of city link Flemington. This bird was
joined by an Australasian Bittern on the 3rd. Thanks Susan Collins.
1 January
A female Blue-winged Parrot was observed flying across the Cabbage Tree -
Cape Conran road approx. .5 kilometre north of the Marlo Plains road
intersection. Thanks Len Axen.
Early January
Some highlights over the last week at the Kerang Lakes. Lake Tutchewop:
c.5000 Whiskered Terns, 1 White-winged Black Tern, 3000 Banded Stilts,1200
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, hundreds of Stints, Red-caps etc. Lake Murphy: 67
Freckled Duck, c.60 Glossy Ibis. Kelly Lake: 150 Marsh Sandpiper, 60 Curlew
Sandpiper, 300 Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, 1 Blue Bonnet. Thanks Sanda.
Updates
Western Treatment Plant, Werribee and Ruff
15 January
Paradise Rd yielded a Buff-banded Rail (on the road), 10 Cape Barren Geese
and no fewer than 6 Brolgas that flew off towards the T-section. 270S Borrow
Pits had 18 Black-tailed Godwit and at least 4 Spotted Crake. 95ES South
Conservation Pond yielded 20 Glossy Ibis, at least 6Spotted Crakes and 2
Baillon's. 35E Pond 8 Conservation Pond had a Ruff, 3 more Glossy Ibis and a
further Spotted Crake. Little River yielded 3 Great-crested Grebe and a
solitary Black-tailed Native Hen, whilst the last spit before Beach Rd had
around 6 Bar-tailed Godwits. And to wrap the afternoon off a tree in my
local shopping centre (Werribee Plaza) had Musk, Little and Purple-crowned
Lorikeets. Thanks Dave Torr.
Northern Victorian Swamps
15 January
Most of the thousands of waders and terns that were present at Lake
Tutchewop have moved on. Kelly lake and Lake Murphy still have lots of
birds. Thanks Simon Starr.
