Hi All,
On the front page of a local paper this week
(Melville Times) was a lead article on the current nesting attempt by 40 pairs
of Fairy Terns at a sand spit at Pt Walter, Perth. This sand spit is well
known to West Aussies as it extends approx 750 metres into the Swan River and is
used by swimmers, walkers and boaters. About 20% of the spit will now become off
limits to the public to at least the end of January and barricades have also
been erected.
To my knowledge this is perhaps the most
significant recent breeding attempt by these terns on the Swan River and is
an encouraging event considering the problems facing the river and its fish
and dependant wildlife.
