Yesterday at midday I was driving past Chelsworth Park in The
Boulevard, Ivanhoe, Vic., and observed a Little Raven walking and poking
about by the parking area plantings.
Its hindneck seemed to be much paler than the black of the rest of
its plumage - either a light-grey or silvery colour. The area affected
was that of the white on the hindneck of a Black-backed Magpie - so much
so that I half-identified it as a Magpie from behind, as I drove towards
it. I slowed down for a better look and found it was definitely a Raven,
but of course it flew off as I came alongside. The paler area was
visible from the side as well as from behind. This was during a sunny
break on that showery day and visibility was excellent.
I looked for the bird as I returned an hour later but no luck.
