Manly Boat Harbour ? south Moreton Bay, Brisbane, Qld. this morning
(22.12.04) at 6.00. North east wind blowing strongly. High tide 7.30 ?
needed to be at work in Spring Hill by 8.00 so only had 1 hour to check
out the waders.
Nothing exceptional, despite my hopes of an early Christmas present. 73
Pied Oystercatchers was the highest number I have recorded this year,
along with 73 Little Terns. Only about 1000 Bar-tailed Godwits (a rough
approx) 113 E Curlews, 12 Greenshanks, 50+ Terrick Sands, usual
Sharpies, only a few Curlew Sands. Lots of Lesser Sand Plovers (~400),
Red-necked Stints (~400) and about 30 Turnstones. Didn't seem to be the
previously recorded numbers of Tattlers today.
Numbers a bit guesswork as the increasing vegetation hid a lot of the
smaller birds. A local female arrived with 3 Irish Terriers and
subsequently put most of the birds to flight, even the Pelicans got up.
Some left and others re-landed and shuffled around uncomfortably before
settling down again.
I approached the dog owner, explained what the area was and how the
birds needed their rest and suggested that she avoid the area at high
tide. She was quite amenable and promised she would in future.
I did notice the following flags ? which I?ll report through the
appropriate channels.
1 E Curlew, 3 Bar-tailed Godwits ? Green flag upper RL ? Qld flagged, I
believe and
1 Terek Sandpiper blue band under silver metal band ? L Leg I think.
