The things you pick up at the local RSL Club!

This morning, on the footpath outside the Dubbo RSL was a small dead bird.  Nothing spectacular about that and from a distance it was passed off as an unlucky sparrow.  However, on closer inspection it turned out to be a male Red-chested Button-quail.  It had obviously struck the only window on that side of the building during the night (button-quail tend to move at night and are often attracted to light).

In absolutely perfect condition, it has been appropriately labelled and installed in the freezer awaiting transportation to a museum.

It is only in the hand that you really appreciate just how small these birds are, particularly when you are used to seeing the relatively big and boofy Painted Button-quail.

Cheers
