Koel Breeding Speed

I believe that the juvenile Koel which turned up at my place this morning is
from the egg which was laid in the Magpie-Lark nest on 7th November - at
least that was the mating day for the Koels.

It was not begging at all, and the Magpie-Larks have both been back for the
last few days, and both looking rather haggard and hassled! The
Magpie-Larks ignored it completely.

Last year, my Koels brought three young to my yard at separate times, the
first in January and the last near the end of March. The juvenile stayed
for about two weeks after the female returned north, but the male was still
here. [Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast, SEQ]

The female is a dark phase and a very beautiful bird. She has a lovely
nature [though the Magpie-Larks may disagree], and sits and "chats" with me
near my back door. She just makes little noises back to me when I talk to
her. The other day, she lay flat on the ground with her wing and tail
feathers extended out to make a complete semi-circle. Just gorgeous! She
stayed until she was so hot, she was panting heavily. She then moved to
her favourite perch in the Banksia Robur and panted until she was cool.
Does anyone know why she would stay in the sun until she reached such a
level of discomfort? I don't see her scratching at all as though she may
have lice.

Does anyone else have such friendly Koels? These spend time within a few
metres of me.

Robyn
