I recently returned from a trip to Eyre Pen (Sept 04)
A useful book is Birds of Southern Eyre Peninsula (Colin Gill & Hazel
O'Connor) - I picked it up at the caravan park in Port Lincoln
Best birding was at Lincoln NP
- Mallee (Western) Whipbird - heard one calling (?) at Thomas & Thomas
site - saw one where road passes Pillie Lake - it hopped out into the middle
of the road and darted back in - this is despite the area being badly burnt
a couple of years back - the low scrub in the area is very thick.
- Southern Scrubrobins - very common behind Taylors Landing
- Western Yellow Robin - on walking track 1-2 kms s-w of Taylors Landing
- Rock Parrots - grassy area about 1-2 kms before Surfeet Cove
- Hooded Plover - Carcase Rocks (4wd required)
- Osprey - nesting on sea stack off cliffs at Wanna
Keldrie Bay
- Southern Emu-wren (Eyre Pen sub-species) - back road from Coffin Bay
to Wangary - from road in low dense bush - about 2-3 kms from turn-off (they
like cutting grass swamps - and there was a lot of this about where I saw
it).
Big Swamp - lake actually - between Port Lincoln & Coffin Bay
- waterbirds
Hincks Conservation Park - 4wd required - access from north - turn left when
reaching park boundary - drive along boundary for several 100 mtrs then turn
right onto main track through middle of park. Eventually you get to a large
cleared area which is a great camping area. (Access from the south is a bit
tricky as the farmer has blocked off the road and you have to drive through
a gate - there is no problems with getting out that way).
- Chestnut Quail-thrush, Southern Scrubrobin, Blue-breasted Fairy-wren
