G'day All,

Last weekend was the BOCA Bird Challenge Count. On Saturday 4th the Cohuna
Team from Nth Vic set out in its various groups and covered the diverse
habitat within 40km of Cohuna. We missed some of the migrant birds that
often are around this time of the year, such as Black Honeyeater,
Budgerigar, Red-backed Kingfisher, Pallid Cuckoo, Australian Pratincole etc.
We also missed some of our usual birds such as Hooded Robin & Banded
Lapwing. Still, we notched up about 150 species, many of them breeding (B)
and generally in good numbers. We had hoped to pick up a Letter-wing Kite
because there was a report of one just over the border last week, but none
was to be seen in our area - yet! Some of the more interesting birds for the
area were Australasian Bittern, Painted Snipe, good numbers of Glossy Ibis &
Orange Chats at Hird Swamp, Brolgas breeding out on the Plains together with
Cockatiel, Little Button-quail, White-winged Fairy-wren, Singing Bushlark,
Brown Songlark and Skylark and the usual woodland birds of the Terricks and
other forested areas - Gilbert's Whistlers, Southern Whiteface, Rufous
Songlark, Bush Stone-curlew, Grey-crowned Babblers, Australian Ringneck &
Dollarbird. There were plenty of Rainbow Bee-eaters round the sand ridges. A
good day was had by the team consisting of Betty Waterson, Norma Sheridan,
Lorna Stutchbree, Chris Coleborn, John Pople, Wayne Hester, Simon Starr, Bob
& Herta Wheeler, Michael & Sharon O'Brien & Bill Waller. The full list is
below:
