hi folks
must say how depressing I find it to hear descriptions of "big" groups
of needletails numbered at 30 or so: not so long ago - last 15 years -
it was possible to spot hundreds spiralling in the sky above bushland in
the Lake Macquarie area. One of my favourite birds. I do recall having
to run for my life on one occasion when I tried to stop a group of
shooters taking some target practice at a flock of needletails: don't
think the cretins were up to the mark with the birds, but I was in
trouble!
Wonder what the explanations are for the demise of needletail numbers:
don't figure shooters have knocked them all out. Habitat issues I
gather.

It looks like the swifts have arrived in the Sydney area too - first
small
groups (6-10 birds) seen from my house in Turramurra on 13 November and
a
big group (30+) seen this afternoon (15 Nov). All Needletails as far as
I
could see.
