One of the biggest wildlife surveys in the world has found that waterbird
numbers in a significant part of Australia are at their worst levels in
more than 20 years.
The month-long aerial survey looked at about 50 bird species on rivers and
wetlands across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.
Dr Richard Kingsford from the NSW Environment Department says the annual
survey has been going since 1983 and he has never seen it so dry and
with so few birds.
"There was a big drought in the 90s which we certainly picked up on but
I don't think it had quite such a dry period as this one, it's really the
vast areas of New South Wales and Queensland that are really copping it,"
he said.
