In general I would avoid zoom binoculars - the zoom adds to the cost and
weight and may degrade the image quality and field of view while being
difficult to hold steady at high magnifications. A fixed 10X42 should be
ideal for most situations except Pelagics where I prefer lighter binocs.
Telescope are different, of course, as you are using a tripod.
