Rufous Scrub-bird Surveys

*Ekerlogic Consulting Services (ECS) has been commissioned by the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia (CERRA) and NSW Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) to undertake the 5th year of monitoring of this threatened species.

The Rufous Scrub-bird surveys are about to recommence after a little rain led to the postponement of surveys in  Werrikimbe and New England. You're all welcome to participate in the fifth year of this monitoring program to assess the abundance of the rare and cryptic species and camp out in the World Heritage Rainforests of the east coast. To date, information collected by volunteers in these surveys has contributed toward publications such as the Handbook of Australian New Zealand and Antarctic Birds, The Action Plan for Australian Birds (2000), and State of Australia's Birds Report (2003 - which will be ongoing).

Those wishing to participate in any of these surveys (incl QLD surveys), the dates meeting times and locations are below.  Remember, those who participate will be reimbursed for their fuel and food expenses.  Participants will be briefed on the survey methods, biology and calls of the Rufous Scrub-bird at a pre-survey briefing on the Saturday morning.

Recent surveys in Border Ranges, Barrington Tops, Werrikimbe and Gibraltar Range, there were record numbers of Rufus Scrub birds recorded.  In fact,  there were 18 RSB's observed in Werrikimbe; 16 in the Border Ranges; and 14 in Barrington Tops.  There were quite a few good sightings of males and female birds.
