I had a good day's birding in the Hawkesbury and western Sydney last
Friday. Although nothing really special, I had brilliant views of many
species. Here are the highlights...
FAIRLIGHT RD., MULGOA - 1.5 km along the road heading west - Peregrine
Falcon (staggering views - two birds quite close), Pallid Cuckoo, Koel,
Channel-billed Cuckoo, Scarlet Honeyeater, White-throated Gerygone,
Varied Sittella, Rufous Whistler, Crested Shrike-tit, Olive backed
Oriole, Noisy Friarbird, Satin Bowerbird, Leaden Flycatcher etc. Was
interested to see Bell Miners harrassing a Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike.
DEVLIN RD., CASTLEREAGH - Awesome Fairy Martin colony in mud nests on
the side of a two storey house not far from junction with Castlereagh
Rd., also saw Weebill here
CORNWALLIS RD. - White-winged Trillers, Brown Songlark, Singing
Bushlark, Rainbow Bee-eater, 60+ Zebra Finches, Double-barred Finch,
Eastern Whipbird, Black-shouldered Kite, Australian Kestrel
CASTLEREAGH STATE FOREST - Fuscous Honeyeater, Weebill, White-winged
Chough, Pallid Cuckoo, Brush Cuckoo and Shining Bronze-cuckoo, Dusky
Woodswallow
I was hoping to see a Regent or Painted Honeyeater, Hooded Robin,
Spotted Harrier, Square-tailed Kite, Chesnut-breasted Mannikin... but
alas.
Had a Grey Goshawk fly over the Olympic Stadium turn off on the M4 when
heading home.
