Hi birders
A couple of years ago (around June 2001 actually) there was some
discussion on this list about Olive Whistlers of the ssp hesperus - the
'Glenelg Olive Whistler'. It's national status is Near Threatened
(Garnett & Crowley 2000), and from the amount of habitat fragmentation
and disconnection it has already suffered is likely to head towards
Vulnerable in the future.
I've had a couple of encounters with this taxon in recent times. The
first was in a pine plantation (37°20'34"S 140°58'26"E, GDA) just over
the South Australian border towards Penola (from Dergholm in SW
Victoria) on 29 September 2004. This is a bit further north than
expected, and perhaps slightly odd habitat.
This last week I've been looking at some regrowth coastal scrub
(38°21'32"S 141°26'3"E, GDA) on Bridgewater Bay just west of Portland
in SW Victoria. Olive Whistlers were recorded at 50% of sites in the
older/larger regrowth, and about 15% of sites in the lower/younger scrub
on the foredune (29% overall). If I had to estimate, I'd suspect there
to be between 15-20 birds in about 90 hectares of scrub there. Rufous
Bristlebirds (nominate form) were very widespread there too - 63% and
62% respectively (62% overall). Otherwise avifaunal diversity was
relatively low in this regrowth area - about 35 yerrestrial bird species.
For crow fans, Little Ravens at 51% and 31% of sites, and Forest Ravens
25% and 0% respectively.
