The first Koel to hit Warwick QLD was Fri night
8/10.
Perhaps the coast is saturated with Koels by now
and they are begining to overflow west of the range?
Most of my friends cant tell the difference between
a Peacock and a Peewee so asking them "Have you heard a Koel, yet?" usually
brings an bewildered look and a backward step.
Imitate that call and they all know whether they've
heard one lately.
Then they follow up with stories of throwing rocks
at trees in the middle of the night etc.
This time there seems only to be 1 so far. My
backyard is on the Condamine R. and the tall trees are a great spot for a Koel
to advertise its presence.
Past years have seen Blue-faced Honeyeaters and
Magpie-larks raise young Koels, although the past 2 seasons have seemingly been
dot breeding years as most of the local spp havent reproduced (local magpies
have only fledged young twice in the last 4 seasons due, mostly likely, to the
dry and Crested Pigeons twice in three years).
