Birdline Victoria Update No. 179
For the week ending: 10 October 2004

The Ruff, which was first reported by Birdline on the 2nd, was seen by a
number of observers between about 13:30 and 15:30 Friday. It was at the
water's edge in the series of small bays on the N shore of the Paradise Rd
Lagoon at the extreme eastern end (near the gate to the Little River) -
slightly further west than the old boardwalk where it has been seen before.

10 October
A Black-eared Cuckoo was sighted in trees along Emily St, leading to Lake
Victoria at Point Lonsdale. Both Shining Bronze-cuckoos and Fan-tailed
Cuckoos have also been regularly calling in this area over the last two
days. Thanks Rod Corinaldi.
10 October
A Brown Gerygone on the main track north of the car park of the Ferntree
Gully NP. The bird was about half way between where the three tracks from
the car park converge and the start of the 'thousand steps'. It was singing
briefly and feeding in vegetation at about head height on the left hand side
of the track as you head uphill. Also Red-browed Treecreeper, a few Rose
Robins, Long-billed Scrubwren and two Wedge-tailed Eagles over. Thanks Simon

10 October
A pair of Banded Lapwings are currently nesting in grassland adjoining
Bulmans Road in West Melton. Thanks Micah Kawalek.
9 October
4 Hooded Plovers were seen at Marlo. Thanks Dick Turner.
8 October
A pair of Satin Flycatchers were seen nesting in a Blackwood next to Sailors
Creek, at the Tipperary Springs picnic ground on the western outskirts of
Daylesford. This picnic area is a part of the Hepburn Regional Park. Thanks

8 October
At the Western Treatment Plant at the Conservation Ponds were approx 15
Black-tailed Godwit, 5 Marsh Sandpiper and 8 Glossy Ibis (in long grass near
lots of Purple Swamphens ). Thanks Ben Sinclair.
7 October
A small flock of White-browed and Masked Woodswallows were seen at Lake
Linlithgow, sw Victoria. Thanks Steve Clark.
5 October
Some highlights of the Western Treatment Plant, Werribee: an adult
White-bellied Sea-eagle and Black Kite over paradise Ponds; 2 Bar-tailed
Godwits feeding on outgoing tide south side of little River; 1 Golden Plover
in part breeding plumage feeding with Red-necked Stints, Sharp-tailed
Sandpipers and Curlew Sandpipers in same area as Godwits; 16 Black-tailed
Godwits roosting at conservation ponds and 25 Whistling Kites together along
beach front, western end of area 3 on access map. Thanks Wendy Dunn.
6 October
Whilst scanning the Paradise Rd Lagoon (in vain) for the Ruff at about 0900
this morning Dave Torr saw a male Northern Shoveller (presumably the one
that was there earlier this year) on the long spit of land that nearly
reaches the road. Shortly after it flew off with other shovellers - towards
Lake Borrie.
Other good birds were two Bar-tailed Godwit (on Paradise Rd), 6 or so Glossy
Ibis (Conservation Ponds), 3 Black-tailed Native-Hens (road near hide) and a
Pacific Golden Plover (mouth of Little River).
4 October
15 Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos flying west over Edinbourough Gardens,
North Fitzroy. Thanks Sean Dooley.
3 October
Highlights of this month's Port Fairy Pelagic include a huge raft of
Short-tailed Shearwaters that may have exceeded 1,000,000 birds! Other birds
include a Hutton's Shearwater, a Northern Royal Albatross and 2 Southern and
10 Grey-backed Storm-petrel. Thanks Mike Carter.
3 October
A Blue-billed Duck was at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne in Wylies
Wetland on Sunday -a first recorded sighting of this species for the
Gardens. Thanks Arnis Dzedins.
3 October
There were at least 3, White-fronted terns at Table Rock near Ricketts
Point, Beaumaris. Thanks Vin Lam.
1 October
There was a Ruff feeding with other waders at the Western Treatment Plant on
the Paradise Rd ponds. Thanks Ben Smith.
Late September
Highlights of 4 days wandering about between Poolaijelo in far Western
Victoria and just around Penola in South Australia include a few Rufous
Songlarks; Chestnut-rumped Heathwren!! - local rarity & always nice to see;
Western Gerygone - out of range; Olive Whistler - if of subspecies hesperus
as appears, a rareish inland record (in pine plantation!!); Masked Owl -
enigmatic as ever and Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos. Thanks Lawrie Conole.
30 September
8 Little Corellas were observed over the residential area of Marlo
screeching and calling as they flew past. The New Australian of Australian
Birds and HANZAB Vol 5 highlights their absence from this area of Far East
Gippsland. Thanks Len Axen.
30 September
4 Little Terns were seen flying over the Corringle ocean beach adjacent to
the mouth of the Snowy River. An extremely early sighting for this area.
