I assume 'kettling' isa n American expression.
Books on falconry refer to hawks spiralling upwards in thermals as
'ringing up' - an expression far older than the telephone and the ship's
engineroom and mine bell-code, from which the telephone usage derives.

I must ask what expession glider pilots say - they do it a lot, and are
often annoyed by ibis and pelican flocks joining them. If a thermal is
big enough for a glider, the birds can go up as if in an express lift.
