While noticing the discussion re Channel Bills and Koels I had not
given the matter any thought until I read Jan England's message. I got
to thinking about the shape and geography of Australia and of the
routes the airlines fly or would fly if traveling from Papua New Guinea
to southern Australia.
The big bulge that is eastern Queensland is not on the direct route and
a bird (or plane) following the coast would add quite some distance to
its journey.
Of course some species may follow the coast, some may follow the
greener vegetation of the coastal lands but many MAY use more direct
routes ie through the Gulf or the western coast of Cape York and from
there south through inland (western) Qld and NSW. Cloncurry, Winton,
Charleville etc. I make no claim that the above is fact but suggest it
is something we could hope to gather data on in the future.
regards
Peter
