Attended a Birds Qld campout at Hervey Bay for four days in mid-August,
=
fortunate to camp in bush setting close urban area (thanks Bob & June).
=
Locals arranged a great program of local spots, some on private land, =
and trip included a dawn cruise into Platypus Bay whalewatching (thanks
=
Mike W.)
Hervey Bay has a number of great birdwatching spots and the local =
council has a brochure showing these. Our favourites were Arkarra =
Lagoons at Dundowran, (7 km of Pialba) and Garnet's Lagoon on private =
property near River Heads (where the Mary and Susan Rivers converge
into =
the top of the Great Sandy Straits).
The group got 78 species in under two hours at Arkarra Lagoons with
=
good views of both Whistling Ducks, breeding Black Swans, Darter, and =
the expected ducks ,comorants, water fowl, egrets, both Spoonbill.Brolga
=
was a highlight for those arriving early, as were Magpie Geese for
those =
observantly scanning paddocks on the outskirts of HB.Two raptors only, =
Whistling Kite and Grey Goshawk, four pigeons, Sacred Kingfisher, =
Rainbow Bee-eaters, nine species of honeyeater, including Brush =
Wattlebird and Dusky Honeyeater. Grey-crowned Babblers were seen, along
=
with a male Rose Robin, Leaden Flycatcher, two Whistlers, Spectacled =
Monarch and Double -barred Finch nest-building.
Garnet's Lagoon was visited on a number of occasions, on our pm visit
=
the highlights included Australian Shoveller, Darter, four Egrets ( =
Little,Great, Intermediate,Cattle), and all three Ibis.White-bellied =
Sea-eagles regularly harrassed the waterbirds, as did a Swamp Harrier. =
Latham's Snipe (four) were seen on a small island, five Brolga were
seen =
, along with Black-tailed Godwit, Marsh Sandpiper, Greenshank,
Sharpies, =
Jacana, Red-capped,Black-fronted and Red-kneed Dotterel. The reeds =
produced Little Grassbird and Reed-warbler, Mangrove Gerygone were
heard =
in the mangroves, with very few bush birds in evidence )lagoons are on
a =
well-grazed cattle property).
Other areas visited included Gatakers Bay (W of Pt Vernon), =
Beverley Park,(7km S of Urangan) and Mathiesens Birdhide. Best birds =
seen included Collared Kingfisher,Spangled Drongo, Osprey (nesting at
Pt =
Vernon),Buff-banded Rail, and the discovery of plaetlets in a small =
patch of scrub at Gatakers Bay (the birds could not be located). The =
whalewatching trip was successful, many pods located, close and =
sustained views of mainly juvenile Humpbacks. Gannet were identified, =
other long-range, dark, fast-flying birds were not (it was, after -all,
=
a mini-pelagic-- just ask those with the green gills!!).
Hervey Bay is a good and easy birding spot, the birdwatching locals =
are friendly and more than helpful.
