In response to Bill Stent's and others comments on
Little Black Cormorants , we are lucky in Perth to be still able to witness
spectacular feeding flocks of up to 1000 little blacks on the Swan and
Canning Rivers. This is because up until recent years a large breeding
colony existed at Booragoon Lake in suburban Perth. However due to the lake now
drying out from summer through to early winter (due to low rainfall and
drop in underground water table), declining river water quality and a
population explosion by Australian White Ibis, this colony is under threat.
Unfortunately at this stage CALM are not planning
any culling action on the Ibis. When the lake is dry, the cormorants now roost
in the lakes around the Narrows Bridge, just outside the
CBD.
