Dear Aus-Birders

Joy has sent me 2 more photographs of the Rosy Starling which we posted on our website, and also updated the text that goes with it.

Craig Robson got back with the following: "I can see absolutely no reason why this should not be a true vagrant. In recent years, it has been turning up in NW, W, C, and S Thailand, north-west Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and E Tonkin in Vietnam; in other words, all over South-East Asia."

I have enjoyed all the debate and comments about the bird, but particularly Lawrie Conole's comments about the big flocks in Central Asia.  In the open plains of Western Australia, this poor bird probably thinks it is already at home on the Kazakhstan steppe.  And also Lorne Johnson’s comment that even though it maybe the first time we are seeing it,  it has been around for awhile.  As big as Western Australia is, anything may be possible.  I have always imagined that in some isolated nook in Western Australia, there is still a new grasswren or some such denizen out there just waiting to be discovered.  Not likely but fun to imagine anyway ;-)
