Hi Birders,
While I cannot comment about the leg colour of Striated Herons away form the
NSW Central Coast, I can say that the local Striated Herons at the nest
building and egg incubating stage, have bright pinkish red legs and this
stands out quite well, in stead of the usual greenish/yellow legs. This is a
means whereby you can find nesting birds, in that if a red-legged Heron
flies past, it is worth following because it is generally going to or from a
nest, and it is the usual means whereby I locate the nests around Tuggerah
Lakes.
I cannot say that have observed the same phenoma in White-faced Herons, but
it seems logical to me especially if it is August/September when they are
seen in this condition.
