Re Tony Russell's observations of Tawny Frogmouths,
I agree that they have numerous favoured roosting sites.
A pair have nested at Heathcote, Applecross(a
suburb of Perth) during the past few years and I have located seven known
regular roosts. There must be at least another site as on some days they cannot
be found at these favoured sites. By the way they have in the past
commenced to breed during August and after raising the first clutch of two, have
nested for the second time in December/January.
They appear to disappear from May to July and it is
possible they move northwards up the coastal plain during this period
in search of warmer weather and more invertebrate life. Do frogmouths
along the east coast indulge in similar movements?
On a similar topic, a pair of Southern Boobooks
have nested at the local school and it appears they too would have at least
seven or eight favoured roost sites.
