On Friday I was out at a study site in the grasslands on Melbourne's
western fringe, and (somewhat unexpectedly) recorded 2 Red-chested
Button-quail. I say 'unexpectedly', as I don't normally associate this
species with winter in southern Victoria. The site is private and
restricted, so I can't give directions!! .... but I would urge anyone
who is out in the middle of a more-or-less native grassland around
Melbourne in the midst of a cold, wet and windy day (ie. some kind of
nutter!) to keep an eye on the 'quail' that you find there. I didn't
find any Stubble Quail on this patch - just a couple of unexpected BQs -
and one thing I got a lousy look at, but which flew like a Plainswanderer!
