In response to Steve Clark's inquiry about Eastern Curlew Records for
inland Victoria I can offer the following observations from the current
distribution map for the species extracted from the Atlas of Victorian
Wildlife.
There are currently at least 11 records since the 1980s of Eastern Curlews
from inland Victoria. They are mostly from central Victoria and along the
Murray (Gunbower and Barmah areas).
The Atlas of Victorian Birds (1987) also states in part :
'Eastern Curlews are summer migrants to Victoria...' 'Each year small
numbers of non-breeding birds remain over winter in coastal areas.'
'Smaller numbers occur elsewhere on coastal mudflats and, rarely, birds
appear on muddy edges of inland saline lakes...'
Steve's observation is well worth forwarding to the Atlas as the species is
already declining in Tasmania and appears to be in se Australia as well.
