Syd Curtis's quote of Alec Chisholm, and his mention of metal Magpie nests
put me in mind of a very close friend from the Riverina who was running late
in preparing his HSC Art project back in the '80s and was lacking
inspiration. While wandering the house paddock he came across a Magpie nest
made entirely from heavy gauge fencing wire, discarded lengths from a
recently finished bit of fencing. As it was obviously too heavy to stay in
the tree, he took advantage of his good fortune by mounting the nest on some
old palings made into a backboard, 'blew out' a chickens egg and mounted
this in the nest, added a few other 'arty' touches and submitted this as his
project. Of course the supervisors assumed he made the nest himself and
awarded him top marks in the year. The humble yet innovative magpie could
have been a little miffed at not getting a credit, as the next season's
'bombing runs' were more ferocious than ever!
Cheers
Steve
