Hi again
Seeing the recent post by Alan Morris- I was in Cunnamulla on the same days
that his group was however we were out before sunrise and back after dark.
My sister's research area was in the 2000 ha Glencoban Paddock about 40k SE
of Cunnamulla and I spent four great days roaming a lot of that area. In
that time I recorded 68 birds and the list is below. The Bustard and Buzzard
were seen on the way to or from the paddock.
The habitat was a mixture of open Mitchell Grass plains with bands of trees
following low drainage lines. A large area of water still remains from the
floods and the road passes through this. The water birds love the road and
it was always careful going to not run over Dotterels or Stilt families.
Highlights for me were:
An Emu nest with the male sitting on a dozen eggs- the colour of those eggs
was such a rich midnight blue.
The inadequately named male Splendid Fairy-wren- he positively glowed and
seemed to know it.
Buff-rumped Thornbills building a nest in a small dead stem of Poplar Box
with the entrance being a hole about 20mm diam in the side of the stem.
The gracefulness of the Brolga on the ground and their flight in the evening
sky.
The strong flight of the Red-winged Parrot.
A Wedgie's nest about 8 metres off the ground in a bloodwood.
There was an abundance of Brown Tree-creepers with the habitat suiting their
preferences and with a plentiful supply of hollows for nesting. One was
proudly guarding a hollow in a fallen limb only a metre off the ground.
The Striated Pardalote was a different race (substriatus) to that at
Ravensbourne with much more subdued colouring.
