With the disgust shared by other subscribers to birding-aus and the precedent given to other fish farming enterprises, I discussed with Keith Fisher my intention to send a "Letter to the Editor", Cairns Post. I used a little "added authority" to the letter being from a local representative of Birds Australia. The letter decried the cheapness with which the courts had devalued birdlife in particular and wildlife in general in view of the fact the many dedicated local people spend their lives trying to save species.
When published on Thursday it was given precedent and chosen as the "Editor's Pick" and had an illustration added. In the letter I pointed out the destruction of Masked Lapwings and Striated Herons (which are well known to us all locally in NQ for being the main reason for the decline of barramundi in the wild in recent decades!)
The management of the company in question are yet to appear in court on charges relating to the same offences. Time will tell but we should not hold our breath waiting for justice on behalf of the birds.
