I'm parrot perplexed and wondering if anyone has come across recorded sightings
of Mallee Ringnecks (Barnardius barnardi)in coastal hinterland around the
Newcastle area. Early this afternoon I was distracted by a parrot calling, not
something I'd heard before, but identifiably parrot-style. On spotting the
bird, and having a good think about it, no other usual, local parrot suspects
have such a deep cherry-red frontal patch, extending to the eye. The only ID
that comes close is the Mallee Ringneck (cherry red or dark red frontal patch,
occasionally? yellow/gold band across front, which this bird had). One thing I
noticed, while the bird was calling insistently, there was some very swishy
tail swinging going on, a bit of tail fanning in the process. Oh, and the bird
was spotted in and just below the crown of a camphor laurel. Perhaps aviary
escapee? I've encountered escaped birds at other times and this parrot seemed
atypical in this respect, which is why I'm wondering if anyone's noticed
apparently sedentary parrots on the move!
