Hi All, I have a male Magpie frequenting my garden area , going around picking up sticks and laboriously carrying them up into a River Red Gum right beside my house. He has been "messing about" like this for some days now but search as I may I cannot find any sign of a nest being built, neither in the tree he spends most of his time in nor in any of the many other trees around. There are NSW Spotted Gums, Red-flowering Ironbarks, Lemon Scenteds etc., all in close proximity.
Last year I had a family of four frequently visiting my garden from a nest some 100m away and am assuming this current male to be one of that family , perhaps trying to establish a territory of his own.
Is this sort of thing common in young Magpies?  He doesn't seem to have a girlfriend around.

Tony.
