This morning I counted 23 KELP GULLS on the sandbanks exposed by the low
tide around the base of the Rye Pier. Thankfully, there was also 42 Pacific
Gulls, so that species still outnumbers them locally. More large gulls too
distant to identify were further along the coast at Rosebud. All ages were
present so it afforded a good opportunity to study the various plumages. A
continuous stream of Silver Gulls, up to 90 in a flock, were arriving from
the direction of Mud Islands and passing inland. Viewing from Sorrento I
could hordes of Silver Gulls over Mud Islands indicating much nesting
activity. This was expected as nesting normally commences there in June.
