Birdline Victoria Update No. 168

There is now some dispute as to how often, if all the, the Baer's Pochard
has been seen since originally sighted on the 3rd of July and still no
confirmation of its identity. Will keep you posted.

Sightings
16 July
There was one Regent Honeyeater at the Ironbark roadside stop on the freeway
just past Chiltern, thanks Sue Taylor.
15 July
There was a Little Eagle in Berwick and a Collard Sparrowhawk on the 9th, as
well as a Lewin's Honeyeater Mt. Burnett near Cockatoo, Dandenong Ranges for
most of July, thanks Graham Chapman.
14 July
A single Banded Lapwing was seen the recently burned remnant grassland
adjoining the Oxford Industrial Estate on Boundary Road Laverton North,
opposite the Derrimut Grasslands Reserve, thanks Micah Kawalek.
13 July
The highlights of the monthly Edithvale Wetland survey were 4 Australasian
Bitterns, 2 Long-billed Corellas and a Collared Sparrowhawk, thanks Mike
Carter.
13 July
On the corner of York and New street Richmond a flock (more than 20) of
Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos were flying overhead, thanks Jon Thornton.
12 July
There was a small flock of about 16 Dusky Woodswallows spotted in the
northern end of Royal Park in Melbourne, thanks Nicole Spillane.
12 July
There were at least 6 Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos in the big pine tree
just north of the eucalypt garden at the botanic gardens today at lunch.
Also a Pied Currawong, at least 15 Nankeen Night Herons and 10+ Song Thrush,
some singing, thanks Vin Lam.
9 July
There was a single female Gang-gang Cockatoo was seen feeding amongst
roadside plantings on Bacchus Marsh Road Corio, 400 meters north of the
Princes Highway intersection. On the same day a pair of Peregrine Falcons
was observed hunting amongst the remnant roadside vegetation along Sandy
Creek Road Anakie East, opposite the Excel Quarry entrance, thanks Micah
Kawalek.
9 July
While searching for the Baer's Pochard, Danny Rogers and Simon Mustoe saw
what could be a female Northern Shoveller, however this will need to await
confirmation (they didn't find the Pochard).
7 July
There were two young OBP's (no bands visible) at the Werribee Treatment
Plant on the track to the right of Beach Road just before you get to the
jetty, thanks Sue Taylor.
5-6 July
Notable species at Hird's Swamp were: pair of White-bellied Sea-Eagles,
Spotted, Spotless and Baillon's Crakes, White-backed Swallows, Australian
Bittern, pair of Brown Goshawk and Australaian Owlet-nightjar. In all 55
species were seen over 24 hours, thanks John Harris.
3 July
There is an adult male Baer's Pochard at the WTP Werribee. It was found
Saturday 3 July by Fred Smith and seen again today by Tom Fletcher & Gordon
McCarthy in exactly the same place. It is on Lake Borrie with 10,000
Pink-eared Ducks but keeps to itself. Best viewed from the track which
skirts the western side of the lake about 50m from where that track takes
off from Paradise Road, just beyond the gate. There is a row of old fence
posts (tern roosts) which project above the water. Beyond those is a row of
rocks which just emerge. When not feeding (diving) it likes to sit on one of
these rocks.
Not previously reported in the southern hemisphere, the species breeds in NE
Asia migrating to southern China in the boreal winter. It is a scarce
visitor to parts of SE Asia and a vagrant to S Thailand.

5 July
At Point Cook Coastal Parkthe following were birds were noted: Crested
Pigeon (high of 46), Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater (2), a very stand-out
leucistic New Holland Honeyeater, Flame Robin (3), Jacky Winter (2),
Black-faced Cuckoo-Shrike (1), singing Skylark, thanks Paul Rose.
2 July
There was 1 pair of Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos in pine trees in Rosanna
Parklands, thanks Doug Franklin.
3 July
There was a Powerful Owl with a Ring-tailed Possum in its talons in a garden
in Langwarrin, Frankston, thanks Mike Carter.
2 July
Peter Lansley & Rob Farnes saw a Southern Fulmar, a Sooty Shearwater and a
Grey-headed Albatross off Cape Nelson, near Portland, thanks Mike Carter.
