Dear all -
Further to the postings earlier this year (and I can find neither the
reference in Wingspan or previous listings here), last weekend I was working
on my annotated Bibliography of Arnhem land ornithology 1802-1964 (29 A4
pages and growing) and came across the following reference which is of
relevance to the recent reports and may be of general interest:
"Mr. G. A. Keartland collected for the S. A. Museum while in charge of a
camp at the Fitzroy and Margaret Rivers 45 miles from Derby. Notes 300 skins
abandoned due to difficulties. See North (1887). Keartland was on the Horn
Scientific Expedition in Central Australia. Note at North (1898) the
description from Keartland?s field notes at p. 160 refers ?No. 56. Glareola
orientalis (Eastern Pratincole)? in numbers rising ?like a continuous column
of smoke and circling overhead until they spread out so as to almost obscure
the sky? and more, including them being prohibited birds because of their
propensity to bring rain."
I am unsure of the publication for this article but the reference I have is:
North, A. J. (1898) List of Birds Collected by the Calvert Exploring
Expedition in Western Australia. (Unsure of publication): 125. I can provide
a copy by fax or snail mail if required.
I have almost completed a first draft of the bibliography of Arnhem Land
ornithology (inevitably it goes beyond the boundaries known today) 1802-1964
and will make it available for distribution and comment/additions in the
near future. I am also inevitably collecting similar material for the rest
of the NT for that period and later.
Please contact me directly for a copy of the Bibliography if interested.
