Hi Birders,
I was interested to read about the Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater seen in Royal NP
on 6/6/04 at Uloola Falls and to note Ricki Coughlan's comments.
As far as I am aware, there are about seven Sydney records for the
Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater. These have all been documented in the Birds of
Sydney by E.S. Hoskin and are as follws
August 1938 2 at a Normanhurst garden
5/1/1963 Mount Ku-ring-gai
14/6/75 Pelican Pt near Towra Point
18/6/1977 near Bobbin Head, Ku-ring-gai Chase NP
4/12/1984 South Head, Sydney Harbour NP
15/7 - 1/8/1987 South Head SHNP
and 2 occasions at Bobbin Head KCNP in 1987.
Note all records are basically for coastal marine and or heathland sites.
None of these records are for Royal NP however one was seen nearby in the
Cordeaux Dam catchment area (Illawarra Region) 22/6/1990.
Elsewhere, in Victoria they are not uncommon on coastal heaths, especially
south and west of Geelong and there are other occasional records for coastal
NSW especially associated with coastal heaths.
So good spotting Ricki, only Steven Anyon-Smith can tell us if there are
other records for Royal NP.
