Hi Birders,
Since 1970, the NSW Field Ornithologists Club, now known as Birding NSW, has
published an Annual Report that features all the interesting and unusual
sightings for the State. It includes the highlights from the 6 Regional
Reports (Canberra Region, Central Coast, Clarence Valley, Eurobodalla &
Far South Coast, Hunter,and Illawarra) as well as interesting sightings from
all the local bird club newsletters, information on Birding-aus and
information from individuals who annual report on their special sightings
that they have may throughour the year.
The Report also includes the Annual Report of the NSW Records Appraisal
Committee.
The report is approx. 80 pages in size, and the 2001 Report reports on on
419 species, with information coming from over 100 journals & newsletters
and records from 368 individual observers. The Report provides an over view
of the nesting of colonial waterbirds and seabirds, arrival and departure
dates of migrants and the passage of the rarer species across the State.
A number of unusual or otherwise significant records were received in 2001
with one new species the Lesser Yellowlegs being added to the New South
Wales List. This bird remained for six days at the same spot in the Ash
Island Ponds and enabled many observers to see this species for the first
time. New information was provided on such rare species as the Pied Heron, a
medium size colony being found breeding in the Macquarie Marshes in January
2001, and this was only the 3rd occasion that the species had been seen in
NSW; Spotted Bowerbirds were found on the North Coast and another Yellow
Wagtail found its way to the Ash Island ponds. A Grey-headed Albatross was
identified from the land at Maroubra and an Oriental Pratincole provided
great viewing from the bird hide at Dangars Lagoon, Uralla much to the
delight of the local bird watchers.
