Hi all
apart from the South to North traffic of honeyeaters over my house in
Turramurra (N Sydney) at present, there is also an interesting West-East in
the morning and opposite in the evening movement of Lorikeets (primarily
Musk but some Scaly Breasteds) - which I refer to in my own mind as "the
commuters". At present numbers are relatively small (I have seen/heard
plenty of groups going over, but they are in the 2-5 bird range and
occassionally a bigger group of 10 or so), but this pattern already seems
similar to a series of observations from early April to mid-July 2000 (pre
me joining the list) when the commute peaked at a count of 1,080 west bound
birds between 4 and 4:45 pm on 24 June.
I'm not sure where they're from (Cumberland SF is almost due west of me?) or
where they are going (due east gets me to Middle Harbour Creek in Garigal NP
and thence Narabeen) but there must be something flowering over there
somewhere!
It will be interesting to see if the numbers grow and if any of the Sydney
readers can shed any light on their home base or where they are going for
the day.
