Hello all,
I live within the territory of a pair of Australian Ravens ( Corvus
coronoides ) .Also resident is a newly arrived family of Koreans, my
next-door neighbours. The father of the family was doing what all
recently arrived Asian migrants do i.e.practicing his putting on the
back lawn.Whilst we were attempting to communicate over the side fence,
down swooped one of the corvids and grabbed the golf ball, carried it in
its beak to the far side of my garden , where it dropped it. Henry , my
neighbour , said something in Korean which he obviously could not
express in English. I returned the ball and in conversation with his
delightful little wife Anne discovered that he had said something for
which she felt she had to appologise. She said that Henry felt that
these creatures were not true birds--he described them as "demons"-- as
they did not sound like birds or act like them. When he went on his
weekly golf excursion to Balgowlah (a northern suburb of Sydney) Anne
would make him a sandwich which he placed in the zipped up pocket of his
golf bag , to be later enjoyed in the pleasant surroundings of the
course.. This all changed however, when the resident Ravens broke the
secret code of the zip fastener. If he left his buggy for any reason he
would return to find the zipped pocket on his golf bag undone, his snack
and sometimes a spare ball or two gone--- a most frustrating experience
. He said that they dragged at the zipper tags until enough room was
made to insert the beak. Apparently not only had he caught them in the
act but other golfers had also suffered from the attentions of these
