G'day Birdos
Just a quick note to let those in the Sydney area know (if you haven't
already guessed it) that Curra Moors and the Wattamulla area in the Royal
National Park is absolutely going off at the moment. The autumn flowerings
and recent rains have brought on good numbers and heaps of breeding
activity. All the creeks are flowing beautifully and the air is frequently
filled with honey scents.
Here's a list of what I saw this saturday and have seen similar on previous
weekends this month in the course of a couple of hours of walking each time.
This list includes the forested section before the heathland: Please note
that the Raptor list here is a composite of three visits and is included to
serve as an idea of what to expect, the rest of the list is as I observed on
Saturday.
Australian Hobby - 2
Brown Goshawk - 1
Swamp Harrier -1
Grey Goshawk -1
White-browed Scrubwren - heaps
Spotted Pardalote - 1
Brown Thornbill - several
Striated Thornbill - couple
Variagated Fairy-Wren - 20+
Southern Emu-Wren - 10+
Chestnut-rumped Heathwren - several
White-throated Treecreeper - couple
Grey Butcherbird - couple
Noisy Friarbird - several
Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike - couple
Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo - several flocks from 20 to 100+
Beautiful Firetail Finch - All breeding (saw at least 1 dozen)
Red-browed Finch - several
Australian King Parrot - several
Crimson Rosella - several
Eastern Spinebill - hundreds
Yellow-winged Honeyeater - 10+ some breeding
Little Wattlebird - dozens
Red Wattlebird - couple
Tawney-crowned Honeyeater - couple
Scarlet Honeyeater - couple (immature males)
New Holland Honeyeater - several hundred - most seem to be breeding
Pilotbird - 1
Rufous Whistler - couple (heard several more)
Fantail Cuckoo - 1
Grey Shrike-thrush - couple
Dusky Wood Swallow - 1
Welcome Swallow - 10+
Many reptiles - including scale feet (legless) lizards and, happily, lots of
Jackie Dragons and, of course Coppertail Skinks. Plenty of Deer still
attempting to spoil the show, the odd echidna and a couple of Swamp
Wallabies. Too many cat or fox trails - they obviously know that there's a
breeding bonanza on at the moment.
Sadly, not meeting any other birders out there at the moment. Suggest that
you get amongst it if you live in the area.
