G'day all Sequencers!
Many sincere thanks to all of you that sent advice and comments regarding
the Sequence of Orders and Families etc. I am just a little overwhelmed with
the response.
I am trying to summarise the information and what it means, but have a time
shortage at present!
I am however still at a loss as to how I can relatively quickly learn and
become fluent in the sequence, let alone how to teach it to my kids and
others! Surely it is not just a matter of spending years and years of
fiddling about in Field Guides?
Where is there any structured informal learning in this topic? For example,
what methods are used to teach/learn it in Universities and other places?
How about a good book reference or two for keen but not
academic/professional birders?
And where can I get a free (from a Uni, Government Department, birding
organisation etc) Excel spreadsheet file of all Aussie (or preferably
worldwide) bird species, listing the Order and Family etc information for
each? Surely this sort of knowledge is "public domain" rather than
proprietary?
The issues here are therefore about:
- how one can transfer the sequence knowledge relatively quickly and easily
to others, and
- how to acquire a computer file containing all the hierarchical sequence
information for birds.
Just a little help would benefit the next generation of interested birders
coming along in my family, as well as me!
Kind regards,
Myles
