Tom Delaney has reported a dark headed gull yesterday (Monday 5th) at the
South Mole at Fremantle harbour.
Unfortunately he didn't get full details as he only saw the bird in
flight. Smaller than a Silver Gull, dark head (nearly a full hood), dark
upperwings.
He looked for it briefly today at lunch time but didn't relocate it.
He initially thought it might be a Sabine's Gull mainly because of its
small size, but he did not see white secondaries, so this is unlikely. If
you see the bird, then take note of the upper wings details, and the colour
around the eye. Sabine's is also the least likely as it tends to be more
pelagic, and it doesn't tend to hang around for long. So Franklin's is
most likely, with maybe Laughing or perhaps Black-headed being chances.
I am busy at the moment, but I hope to make some time to look for it in the
next two days.
